Lucia teaches me how to use the giant pounder! She is only 11 years old and really good. Much better than me. The wooden pole is rather heavy. Heavier than I would have imagined. I watched her and then we did it together. I was feeling confident so I asked to do it all alone-- just about knocked over the base with all the coffee grounds. The children all got a good laugh. Luckily for me the ladies were all out in the fields so I didn't have them laughing at me too!
Lucia and I did the rest of the pounding together.
Lucia's mother-- Catrina with baby Paul on her back. A few days later Catrina taught me how to use the coffee pounder too! At first we did it together and I was feeling more confident than earlier with Lucia. Then she let me do it on my own. I was rather nervous at first. I held up the wooden beam and just started laughing! I had gathered an audience of children. I didn't quiet do it like Catrina, extending both my arms above my head, but I did manage to pound the coffee.
BTW the next 2 days my forearms were rather sore. I guess it was more of a work out than I realized :)
Catrina breast feeding 2 babies. One is her's- Paul on the left.
And of course all the kids!
